Greyhounds - Should You Breed?

Greyhounds are great dogs and many Greyhound owners think of breeding their dogs. The most common reasons why some people want to breed Greyhounds are the following: to show their children a miracle of birth, to have pups that will resemble their much-loved pet, and to make money. All these are the wrong reasons to get involved with breeding your dog. Breeding your dog means that the resulting puppies will have approximately 50 percent of your Greyhound's genes. An inexperienced breeder cannot be sure that the puppies in the litter are going to inherit the qualities that you want. You can find a reputable breeder who will evaluate your dog. He will tell you if your dog is free of health and temperamental problems. Unless you have proven the quality of your dog in the show ring, a reputable breeder will refuse to breed your dog. It is a difficult task to place puppies after they have reached the proper age. Responsible breeders know the people and the homes their puppies will go to long before the sire and the dam have actually been mated. Reputable breeders have waiting register of potential Greyhound owners that should have "passed an exam" to get onto the list. Consider a possibility that some of the people, who told you it would be great to have a puppy from your dog, are not ready to commit themselves when the time has come.
Breeding takes time and money. If you are really prepared to bear all the expenses and can devote enough time to raising the litter and caring for the dogs, there are still other things to consider. There are many Greyhounds, as well as dog of other breeds, that are euthanized because people do no care for them.
